Concrete Driveway Replacement

Concrete driveway replacement means tearing out the old slab, properly prepping the base, and pouring a new driveway built to last. Custom Concrete & Truck Service handles the full job in-house, including demolition and haul-away, with one crew from start to finish.

Driveways don't fail overnight. They crack slowly, develop low spots, and start collecting water after every rain. Then one Illinois winter does the rest. By the time most people call a concrete contractor, the slab has been a problem for a couple of years and they're tired of looking at it.

The other issue people run into: they call a contractor and find out the old concrete is their problem to deal with. They have to hire a demolition crew, arrange a dumpster or a haul-away service, and coordinate schedules before the new work can even start. That adds time, cost, and another set of phone calls.

We built our business to handle all of it. One call, one crew, start to finish.

What Concrete Driveway Replacement Actually Involves

Replacement is not the same as an overlay or a patch. The old surface comes out completely. We break it up, load it onto our own trucks, and haul it away. That part is not subcontracted or scheduled separately. We run our own trucks, so demolition and haul-away are part of the job by default.

Once the slab is gone, we look at what's underneath. Most driveway failures trace back to the base. If the subgrade is soft, poorly compacted, or draining badly, a new slab will develop the same problems as the old one. We grade and compact the base properly, address any drainage issues, and set the right thickness and reinforcement before we pour.

Standard residential driveways are typically poured at four inches with wire mesh or rebar depending on load requirements. Heavier use, like regular truck or trailer traffic, gets poured thicker. We'll walk through those details with you during the estimate so you know what you're getting and why.

After the pour, we finish the surface to your preference, standard broom finish, exposed aggregate, or stamped if you want a decorative look. Then we handle cleanup. The job site should look cleaner when we leave than when we arrived.

The short version: we tear it out, prep the base right, pour a properly reinforced slab, and haul everything away. You get one point of contact for the whole project.

When It's Time to Replace, Not Repair

Not every cracked driveway needs full replacement. But there are some signs that patching won't fix the problem.

The slab is sinking or heaving in sections. When sections drop below grade or push up at joints, the base has moved. Surface patching won't correct what's happening underneath.

Water pools and won't drain. Low spots that collect standing water mean the slab has settled unevenly. That water works into cracks, freezes in winter, and accelerates damage. It can also send water toward the foundation.

The surface is more crack than slab. When a driveway has reached the point where every freeze-thaw cycle opens new cracks and the surface is flaking apart in sections, replacement costs less in the long run than ongoing patch repairs.

The driveway is 25 or more years old. Concrete driveways last a long time when they're installed correctly. But there's a point where the material has run its course and a new pour is the practical choice.

Our Process, Start to Finish

1. Free on-site estimate. We come out, look at the existing driveway, measure the area, and talk through your options. You'll get a clear price before any work starts.

2. Scheduling. We work across St. Clair, Madison, and Monroe County. Spring and summer fill up fast. If you're planning a spring project, it's worth reaching out in late winter to get on the schedule.

3. Demolition and haul-away. We break out the existing slab and load it onto our trucks. No separate demo crew, no dumpster sitting in your yard for a week.

4. Base prep. We grade the subbase, compact it, and confirm drainage before forming the slab. This step is where driveways either last or fail early.

5. Forming, reinforcement, and pour. We set forms, place reinforcement, and pour the concrete. We work with the mix and thickness specified for your project.

6. Finishing and curing. We finish the surface to your spec and score control joints to manage where the slab relieves stress. Curing time depends on temperature and conditions, and we'll walk you through what to expect.

7. Cleanup. Forms come down, the site gets cleaned up, and we leave you with a timeline for when the driveway can handle foot traffic versus vehicle traffic.

What Driveway Replacement Costs

Concrete driveway replacement costs vary depending on the size of the driveway, whether the existing slab requires demolition, base conditions, thickness and reinforcement requirements, and finish type.

Decorative finishes like stamped concrete or exposed aggregate add cost over a standard broom finish, but they hold up the same way structurally and may be worth it for curb appeal.

The most accurate number comes from an on-site visit. We measure the area, assess what's there, and give you a written price before any work begins. There's no charge for the estimate and no pressure to move forward.

We handle it. We run our own trucks, so we break out the old slab, load it, and haul it away as part of the job. You don't need to hire a separate demo crew or arrange a dumpster.
