A pool deck takes more abuse than almost any other concrete surface around a home. Sun, water, bare feet, pool chemicals, and Illinois freeze-thaw cycles all hit it year after year. When a deck is poured thin, drained wrong, or finished slick, it shows fast — chips, cracks, and surfaces that get dangerously slippery when wet. Getting it right starts before the first truck arrives.
What a Concrete Pool Deck Involves
A pool deck is more than concrete poured flat next to water. It has to drain away from the pool and away from the house. It needs a finish that holds grip when wet. It has to sit on a properly compacted base so it does not settle or crack in the first few years.
We handle all of that in-house. Because we run our own trucks and equipment, we do the grading and base prep ourselves. We are not waiting on a separate excavation crew or coordinating with another company. The base is graded to drain correctly before a single yard of concrete is ordered.
Finish options include broom finish for a practical slip-resistant surface, exposed aggregate for a textured higher-end look, and stamped concrete for patterns and colors that match the rest of the backyard. Stamped pool decks have become popular because they look like stone or pavers at a lower cost and seal well against pool chemicals and UV.
We also pour pool decks as part of full inground pool projects. If you are building a pool and need the deck to go in at the same time, one crew handles the excavation, the pool, and the surrounding concrete. That keeps the schedule tight and eliminates the coordination problems that come with multiple contractors.
When You Need a New Pool Deck
The existing deck is cracking or lifting. Concrete that was poured without proper base prep tends to crack and shift within a few years. If sections are lifting at the edges or cracking along control joints, the base underneath has likely moved.
The surface is slippery. A broom finish loses its texture over time, especially with pool chemicals and regular foot traffic. A smooth, worn surface around water is a real safety problem for kids and adults alike.
You are finishing a new pool installation. A new pool without a finished deck sits in bare dirt or unfinished grade. The deck is the surface people actually use, and doing it at the same time as the pool keeps the site clean and avoids a second mobilization later.
The deck is draining toward the pool or the house. Water that pools near the house foundation or flows back into the pool creates problems. Proper slope is built into the pour, not added as an afterthought.
Our Pool Deck Process
1. Estimate and layout. We come out, look at the site, and talk through what you need — size, shape, finish, and whether any existing concrete or decking needs to come out first. You get a clear price before anything starts.
2. Demo and haul-away if needed. If there is an old deck to remove, we break it out and haul it off with our own trucks. No separate demo crew, no waiting for another company to clear the site.
3. Base prep and grading. We grade the area to drain properly, compact the base, and set forms. This step is what most failing decks skipped. A properly drained base is what keeps concrete from cracking and settling.
4. Pour and finish. Concrete is poured and finished to your spec — broom, exposed aggregate, or stamped. If stamped, we apply the pattern, color, and sealer as part of the same job.
5. Cure and seal. Concrete needs time to cure before it takes foot traffic and longer before heavy use. We walk you through the timeline so you know exactly when the deck is ready.
6. Cleanup. We leave the site clean. Tools, forms, and any debris go with us.
What a Pool Deck Costs
Pool deck pricing depends on several factors: square footage, the finish you choose, whether old material needs to come out, and how complex the shape is around the pool. A simple broom-finish deck on a straightforward rectangular pool costs less than a stamped deck with curves, built-in steps, and coping detail.
Stamped concrete adds cost over a standard finish because of the materials and labor involved, but it typically runs less than natural stone or pavers installed around the same area.
The only way to get an accurate number for your project is a free on-site estimate. We come out, measure, walk the site, and give you a written price. No surprises after the job starts.
