A plain concrete slab gets the job done, but a stamped concrete patio gives your backyard a finished look that holds up over time. Patterns pressed into fresh concrete can mimic flagstone, slate, or brick. Color hardeners and sealers lock in the look.
If you've been putting off the backyard project because you weren't sure it was worth the cost, that's a fair question. Stamped concrete costs more than a standard broom-finished patio, but it comes in well below a natural stone or paver install. And it's poured as one solid surface, so you don't have weeds pushing through joints or individual pieces shifting out of place over time.
We've been pouring concrete across St. Clair, Madison, and Monroe County for 20 years. Here's how we approach a stamped patio job.
What a Stamped Concrete Patio Means
Stamped concrete starts as regular poured concrete. Before it sets, we press textured mats into the surface to create a pattern. We add color with hardeners mixed into the concrete or applied on top. Once it cures, we seal it.
That sealer matters. A stamped surface without a good seal fades faster and becomes harder to clean. We seal every stamped patio we pour, and we'll tell you upfront how often it needs to be resealed to keep its finish.
What makes one stamped patio last longer than another isn't the pattern or the color. It's the base underneath. If the ground isn't graded and compacted correctly, the slab will settle unevenly and crack no matter how good the pour looks on day one. We prep the base properly before any concrete goes down, every time. That means grading for drainage, compacting the subgrade, and setting the right thickness for the size and load of your patio.
One crew handles all of it, from site prep through the finished pour and sealing. No subcontractors managing a piece of your job.
When You Need a Stamped Concrete Patio
You want a backyard patio that looks good without spending what pavers cost. Natural stone and paver patios are expensive. Stamped concrete gets you a similar look for less, poured as one continuous surface that doesn't shift or settle the way individual pieces can.
Your current patio is cracked, uneven, or just worn out. Older concrete patios in Illinois take a beating from freeze-thaw cycles every winter. If water is pooling on the surface or the edges are crumbling, a new stamped patio replaces it cleanly. We handle the tear-out and haul-away with our own trucks, so you don't need to hire a separate demolition crew.
You're building out an outdoor living space and want it to match. A stamped patio can tie together a new deck addition, a pool surround, or a backyard fire pit area. If you're also looking at a pool deck installation or concrete walkway to connect the yard, we can pour those surfaces to match or complement the patio pattern and color.
You want something that looks better than plain concrete but doesn't need constant upkeep. Stamped concrete isn't maintenance-free, but it's close. Resealing every few years keeps it looking right. Compared to wood decking or a paver patio that needs re-leveling and weeding, it's a lower-maintenance option over the long run.
Our Process
1. Free on-site estimate. We come out, look at the space, and talk through your options. Pattern choices, colors, size, whether there's old concrete to remove first. You get a written price before any work starts.
2. Demo and haul-away (if needed). If you have an old patio that needs to come out, we break it up and haul it off with our own trucks. No waiting on a separate crew.
3. Base prep. We grade the area for proper drainage, compact the base, and set forms at the right elevation. This step is what separates a patio that lasts from one that cracks and settles in a few years.
4. Pour and stamp. We pour the concrete, apply color hardener, and press the stamp pattern before the surface sets. Timing during this step matters, and our crew knows how to read the concrete.
5. Cure and seal. After the concrete cures, we apply sealer to protect the color and the surface. We'll tell you when it's safe to use the patio and what care looks like going forward.
What It Costs
Stamped concrete patios cost more than a plain broom-finished pour. The pattern work and color add labor and material time. The final number depends on:
- Square footage
- Pattern and color complexity
- Whether old concrete needs to be removed first
- Site conditions and how much base prep is needed
For most residential patios in the Metro East area, a stamped pour will run higher per square foot than a standard finish, but lower than a comparable paver or natural stone install. The best way to get an accurate number is a free estimate. We'll measure the space, talk through what you want, and give you a clear written price.
