A pool deck takes a beating that most concrete never sees: standing water, pool chemicals, sunscreen, constant foot traffic, and Illinois freeze-thaw cycles on top of all of it. Over a few seasons the surface fades, roughens, and starts to crack or flake, even when the slab underneath is still sound.
When that happens, you don't always need to tear the whole deck out and start over. If the base is solid, resurfacing restores the look and the safety of the deck for a fraction of the cost and disruption of a full replacement. We resurface and recoat concrete pool decks for homeowners and commercial properties across Belleville and the Metro East.
Resurface or Replace — We'll Tell You Straight
The honest answer depends on the base, and that's the first thing we check.
If the sub-base is still solid and the problems are on the surface — cracking, spalling, a rough or slick finish, faded color, staining that won't clean off — resurfacing is usually the better call. We refinish over the existing slab with a fresh, slip-resistant texture that extends the deck's life without the cost of a full pour.
If the base has moved or failed — large structural cracks, sections that have heaved or settled, drainage that's pushing water the wrong way — we'll tell you that up front. Coating over a failing slab just hides the problem for a season. In that case a tear-out and repour is the right money.
Because we pour decks as well as resurface them, you get a straight assessment either way, not a sales pitch for whichever one we'd rather sell.
When to Resurface Your Pool Deck
The surface is cracked, spalling, or flaking. Surface damage that hasn't reached the base is a good candidate for resurfacing.
It's rough or slippery underfoot. A worn deck can become both uncomfortable and a slip hazard. A fresh slip-resistant finish fixes that.
Stains won't clean off. Rust, leaves, and pool chemicals leave marks that cleaning won't lift. Resurfacing gives you a clean surface again.
The color is faded and tired. If the deck makes the whole backyard look worn out, a recoat brings it back without a full rebuild.
Spring is the best time to resurface — before pool season starts, so the deck is ready when the weather turns.
Our Process
1. Free on-site assessment. We come out and check the deck, focused first on the condition of the base. We tell you honestly whether resurfacing is the right fit or whether the slab needs replacement.
2. Surface prep. We clean and profile the existing surface and address cracks and spalls so the new coat bonds properly. Prep is what determines whether a resurface lasts.
3. Repairs. Cracks, low spots, and damaged sections are patched and leveled before the overlay goes down.
4. Resurface and recoat. We apply the overlay with a slip-resistant texture, and can match a stamped or decorative finish if you want more than a plain surface.
5. Cure and return to service. We give you clear guidance on cure time before the deck is back in use.
What to Expect on Cost
Resurfacing cost depends on the square footage, the condition of the existing surface, how much crack and spall repair is needed, and the finish you choose — a straightforward slip-resistant recoat versus a decorative or stamped overlay.
Resurfacing is almost always less than a full tear-out and repour when the base is sound, which is exactly why we check the base first. If the slab has failed, we'll tell you, because spending money to coat a deck that's going to keep moving isn't worth it.
