The Round House is a landmark folks in Wood River point to when they give directions — a distinctive local fixture in a town that grew up around the oil refineries along the river. The neighborhoods near it are full of the compact, well-built postwar homes that housed refinery and pipeline families for generations. Solid houses. But the concrete out front is often as old as the homes, and it shows.
We remove and replace worn-out concrete throughout the Wood River area. When a driveway or walk has cracked and settled past the point of patching, the right money goes into tearing it out and rebuilding it properly — not into another surface fix that fails by next winter.
Why the Concrete Here Is Ready to Come Out
It's old, and it's earned its retirement. A lot of the flatwork in this part of Wood River was poured decades ago on thin slabs and simple bases. After that many Illinois winters, the freeze-thaw cycle leaves you with spalling, wide cracks, and slabs that have tilted or sunk.
Settled sub-bases. When the ground under a slab compacts unevenly over the years, the concrete cracks along with it. Pouring new concrete over the same failed base just resets the clock on the same problem. We rebuild the base first.
Tighter, older lots. The streets near the Round House were laid out close, with narrower drives and less room to maneuver. We run our own trucks and equipment, so we can get in, tear out, and repour on a tight lot without juggling multiple outside crews.
Water running the wrong way. Older slabs were frequently poured with little slope, so runoff heads toward the house. On a tear-out we reset the grade to carry water away from the foundation.
One Crew — Demo, Haul-Away, and Repour
Because the "Truck Service" in our name is real, we own our trucks and excavation equipment. A removal-and-replacement job near the Round House is one crew, start to finish: break out the old concrete, load it, haul it off, prep and compact the base, form it, and pour new.
No separate demolition company. No waiting on an outside hauler to clear the old slab before we can begin base prep. That keeps the job tight and the schedule honest — which counts for a lot on the smaller lots common in this part of Wood River.
Our Process
1. Free on-site estimate. We come out, look at the failing concrete, check the base and the drainage, and measure. You get a written price before any work starts.
2. Tear-out and haul-away. We break out and remove the old concrete with our own crew and trucks and clear all the debris.
3. Base prep and grading. We regrade and recompact the sub-base and set the slope to drain water away from the house.
4. Forming and reinforcement. Forms and reinforcement go in, planned around access and the shape of the lot.
5. Pour and finish. We pour, finish, and set the surface texture, timed to the weather.
6. Curing. We tell you exactly how long to stay off it before foot and vehicle traffic.
